Music Matters Lights Up the Night

11/28/2019

Music Matters had a great time at Light Up the Night on Friday, November 22, 2019! The weather was forecast to be very chilly, but it turned out to be a beautiful night to get into the holiday spirit!

As in past years, local businesses contributed money to Music Matters to help fund our mission to support Burlington area music education and in return received lanterns to display to help Light Up the Night! Thanks to all the kids and kids at heart who helped make lanterns this year!

Can you identify the businesses where the Music Matters lanterns were found in the following photos? Submit your responses with your contact information using this form or to burlingtonmusicmatters@gmail.com by Wednesday, December 18, 2019. Those with all the correct answers, or the most correct answers if this proves to be challenging, will be entered into a drawing for some Music Matters swag.

A reminder to kids who made lanterns and took one home: bring your lantern and walk with Music Matters in the Burlington Holiday Parade on Friday, December 6, 2019! Music Matters will provide an electric tea light for your lantern.

Avast ye! Opera for the Young Presents The Pirates of Penzance

11/13/2019

In early November students at all four Burlington Area School District elementary schools were transformed from landlubbers into respectable pirates! Opera For the Young (OFTY) presented The Pirates of Penzance at all the schools though a funding partnership between Music Matters, Inc. and the PTO of each school. This partnership has made OFTY presentations possible at BASD schools for the past seven years.

OFTY is an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Madison, WI dedicated to encouraging enthusiasm for opera among children and young adults by conducting school-based performances which involve the students in the production instead of simply as members of the audience. They also provide professional opportunities for artists, create new works that are intended for young audiences, and through their activities increase access to opera in the community.

In preparation for the program, OFTY provided teaching materials for all classes. This year, the third grade students learned The Pirates of Penzance script and music. The the rest of the school was introduced to the characters and story. Therefore, on the day of the performance, all of the students were already familiar with the story, characters, music, and could be highly engaged with the cast from OFTY. In addition, everyone could participate by dressing as a pirate on the day of the performance.

Montessori Levels 1, 2 & 3 presented Artist in Residence Saehee Chan

The students, staff, and parents of Cooper Elementary School were treated to the culture and rhythms of Asia on Monday, March 18, 2019.  The Montessori Level 1, 2 and 3 students worked for many weeks learning songs, culture, music, and instruments from Vietnam, China, Japan, and Korea.

Sahee Chang, a teaching artist and local drummer who works in the Milwaukee area schools, came to Cooper to teach the children the various fun rhythms in Korean Drumming and how to perform together.

Saehee is passionate about sharing her knowledge of Korean traditional drumming and recently won a prestigious grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board as a Master Teacher for the Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program. When she is not teaching drumming, she serves as a Korean Culture and Educational Consultant and teaches classes on Korean cooking.

This was all made possible when Mrs. Sally Carlson, music teacher at Cooper School, applied to Music Matters, Inc. for a grant of $1300  to bring Sahee to Burlington.

We had a great time at the Burlington Home & Garden Show this past weekend. Our Tootsie Pop Ghirardelli Triple Chocolate brownies won 4th place in the Brownies and Bars category of the chocolate contest. We enjoyed meeting with local businesses, seeing several of our supporters, and making new friends.

Here is the recipe for our brownies!

Tootsie Pop Rainbow
Ghirardelli Triple Chocolate Brownies

Ingredients:
Tootsie Pops 1 ea. of lemon, orange, cherry, grape, and chocolate
Ghirardelli Triple Chocolate Brownie Mix
2 Eggs
2/3c oil
2/3c water

Pan: half-sheet pan 12 x 18
Oven Temperature: 325 degrees
Baking time: Total is 50 mins. Read directions

Directions:
Crush the Tootsie Pop candy using a plastic bag, towel placed over the plastic bag and a hammer.  Set aside.
Place parchment paper on baking pan.
In mixer, combine water, eggs, and oil. Should be well mixed before adding mix. Then add two pouches of Ghirardelli Triple Chocolate Brownie Mix (add one pouch if using a 9 x 13 pan, and reduce in half; oil, water, and eggs).
Pour onto baking sheet. Bake at 325 degrees.
After 45 minutes, pull pan out of oven measure out the equal sections of the pan so each colored candy stripe is same width. And sprinkle candy, in stripes, on top of brownie.
Place back in oven and allow candy to melt but not soak into brownie. Could be 3 to 5 minutes.
Take brownies out and let cool before cutting.
